About me

annie [dot] vainshtein [at] gmail [dot] com.

I’m a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle covering crime, criminal justice and breaking news in the Bay Area.

My work often follows a story beyond the initial event, tracing the complicated paths cases take through the court system, and the ways upheaval, loss and violence reshape the lives of people and families.

Before joining the Chronicle, I wrote for SFGATE, Vice and Flood Magazine. I previously covered arts and culture for Datebook, the Chronicle’s arts and entertainment section.

I studied journalism at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where I wrote for the campus newspaper and produced radio stories for KCBX, an NPR-affiliate.

My work has been recognized by the San Francisco Press Club and the California Journalism Awards.
